13er - South Arapaho Peak with Peter Padilla - 9/19/08 : Friday 19 September: Peter Padilla & Bobbie Turner climb South Arapaho Peak. Weather: Partly cloudy & partly sunny. Starting temp in the 60's. Experienced a little of everything; overcast, sunshine, snow flurries & light rain.

Drove through Nederland past old town Eldora to the Fourth of July Trailhead. Total hiking time 7hrs 45mins. Max elevation 13,048 ft. just below summit of 13,397 ft. Due to time and weather we elected not to summit. As you can see by the last couple of photos we made a wise decision. There was snow on the mountain from about 9,700 ft and above. Once we passed the Fourth of July Mine and got above treeline we were hiking in snow and having to posthole with some sections being knee deep. Once we hit the saddle overlooking the Glacier to make the final approach the trail disappears and it is a scramble to the top. At this point the route became technical and somewhat dangerous with the snow and wet boulders. We did get over the 13,000 ft mark but realized it was not in our best interest to try to summit. Our descent took about 2.5 hrs and when we got back to Boulder we had a well deserved steak dinner. Although this is not a 14er it did not matter to us as this is one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever been on. The Indian Peaks Wilderness Area is a protected Wilderness that borders the National Forest and Rocky Mountain National Park. This is some of the most scenic land in all of the U.S. Peter captured some fantastic images that just gives a sampling of the beauty of this area along the Continental Divide.

Jill's first 14ers! Grays & Torreys - 8/3/08 : Sunday August 3rd 2008

Through a bit of chance in timing Jill got to hike her first 14er today and bagged two of them! Grays Peak & Torreys Peak are separated by a saddle and based on the “rules” in Colorado for Peaking or “Bagging” 14,000 ft plus peaks allows one to count both of them if you care to add the two to your hiking agenda. Jill has been running a bit and with her legs she can cover some distance. The kids had a sleepover last night and long play day today with some neighborhood friends so Jill & I left at dark thirty and drove to the Grays Peak Trailhead up and off I-70. Seven hours later we made it back to the truck with both Grays & Torreys in the bag.

Mt. Yale with George & Greg - 7/29/08 : Friday July 25th - George, Greg & I headed down to the Collegiate Peaks to hike Mt. Yale. We set up camp just a short ways from Avalanche Gulch Trailhead and had a great night of camping with a nice fire, weather, meal, venison and a few beers. Saturday morning we hit the trail just a little before 6 am. We selected this route as it is less traveled than the Denny Creek Trail. Avalanche starts on the Colorado Trail & intersects with the East Ridge Trail up to Mt. Yale. Climbing this route adds distance and elevation. Once above 12,505 ft. the trail really disappears and you have to pick your way up the mountain along the ridge as there are very few Cairns (rocks piled up in a pyramid to mark routes). This is slow going over large rocks with some exposure. We decided on our ascent to make it a loop and head down on the main Denny Creek Trail resulting in a 9 hours, 10.1 mile 5,000 ft hike. Weather was fantastic and the views from atop Yale are awesome!
